‘We need our witnesses and archivists to say we lived, we died, we made this difference.
Where death means nothing, life is meaningless’.
From The Undertaking: Life Studies from the Dismal Trade by Thomas Lynch (1977)
‘To be ignorant of what occurred before you were born is to remain always a child.
For what is the worth of human life, unless it is woven into the life of our ancestors by the records of history?’

Wainsgate’s historic documents, photographs and artefacts are mostly kept in the Hebden Bridge Local History Society archive at Birchcliffe or the West Yorkshire Archive Service archive at Halifax library. Some items are kept at Wainsgate (including framed photographs of ministers and Sunday school teachers, framed photographs of men who died in WW1, and the 1905 graveyard plan) and some items are still in the possession of the Historic Chapels Trust (mostly leases, conveyances, agreements and other legal documents).
The document below lists all of the documents, photographs, pictures, plans and artefacts that make up Wainsgate’s archive, together with their whereabouts:
There are some documents which seem to have disappeared, particularly Burial Certificates, Cremation Certificates and Coroner’s Orders for the period (up to 2005) when the graveyard was administered by the Baptist Church. It is believed that these were removed from the safe at Wainsgate when ownership passed to Historic Chapels Trust, but their current whereabouts is unknown.
The documents reproduced and transcribed below are those of particular relevance to the burial ground:

The main record of burials from 1815 until 2004 (when Wainsgate was transferred to the Historic Chapels Trust) is a large register, now rather dilapidated (R / WAI 52M) which is kept in the Hebden Bridge Local History Society archive at Birchcliffe. It lists most of the burials from 17th February 1815 (Hannah Bancroft, aged 79) to 25th October 2004 (Kenneth Crowther, aged 78): a few burials do not seem to have been recorded, and there are no entries for 1900 or 1901. The earlier entries, up to 1878 when George Wilkinson became minister, seem to have been copied into the register from other documents, whereas the later entries appear to have been made at the time of burial.
Most entries give the name of the deceased, their age, residence, date of burial and (from 1878) the name of the minister officiating, and some of the earlier entries give the plot number.
Many of the earlier entries do not give the full names of children and married women: entries such as ‘John Sutcliffe child’, ‘Jonas Bancroft wife’, ‘William Pickles daughter’s child’ are found up until around 1880.
